Personal Information of Security System Customers Sold to Tax Fraud Ring:
been selling the Social Security numbers and personal information of Tampa Signal customers to individuals who participated in tax fraud. This tax fraud ring was used to open bank accounts, file fraudulent tax returns, and then deposit the funds into these new accounts for easy access to the funds.
The situation was discovered back in April when police were seizing weapons from Kenandrae Telfair’s home and stumbled across a laptop and several notebooks with information such as Social Security numbers, names, and birth dates. Telfair confessed that he paid Rachel Amones, who worked at Tampa Signal, for the information in order to file fraudulent tax returns. Amones admitted that her and another employee were selling information to tax frauds, estimating approximately 3,000 Tampa Signal customers at risk.
While the investigation continues, individuals who have purchased systems from Tampa Signal are strongly encouraged to monitor their credit reports and financial accounts for any unusual activity. Credit report monitoring services are strongly recommended for anyone who may be at risk for identity theft.
